The Two Things That Keep Our House from Unraveling (Sleep and Routine for Neurodivergent Families)

There are a lot of things I try to do well as a parent. Healthy food. Lots of time outside. Less screens (no screens during the week unless its key for schoolwork). Allll the things.

But if I’m being honest? There are really two BIG things that keep our house from completely unraveling:

Sleep + Routine

That’s it. It really is that simple.

Not perfection. Not doing everything “right.” Just protecting those two things as much as we can. And when I think of it as "protection", it seems way more important and less of a burden, because we all want to protect the things that are important to us!

Because here's the truth, when either one is off… everything else gets harder.

More emotions. More resistance. More chaos. Less patience (from everyone, including me which never helps, since our kids always look to us to be their rock).

And when they’re both working?

Things aren’t perfect… but they’re so much better. More manageable. There’s more calm. More flexibility. More connection and that is ultimately the goal.

Especially with neurodiverse kids, I’ve realized this isn’t just helpful or extra. It’s absolutely foundational.

Sleep supports regulation. Routine supports predictability.

Together, they give our kids a sense of safety and and managed expectations and honestly, they give me that, too.

We don’t do it perfectly. Some nights are late. Some days go off the rails. Fun things come up and we push it, but more often than nothing there is a price to be paid. Yikes, we have all had those mornings or evenings where you just quietly say to yourself, this too shall pass!

But when things feel hard, I come back to this:

Did we protect sleep? Did we protect our routine? Did we stick to some kind of normal rhythm?

Because those two small anchors make the biggest difference. So take a minute to think about what you sleep and regular routine looks like and maybe you can tidy things up a bit there to get back to middle ground.
